ARTIST STATEMENT

KAREN ABBO

The feeling of the pulp in my hands, the clay in my fingers, so different yet so much alike. This is what I enjoy about my chosen media. Working with recycled materials is also a passion of mine. I am very environmentally conscious and if the throwaway can be used in my art, I will incorporate it. Currently my need for painting is satisfied in the coloring of the pieces that I design.

I enjoy creating pieces that have an underlying meaning, which the viewer finds as they study the piece. I inject humor into my work through the use of anthropomorphic creatures taking on human characteristics. Inspiration comes from observing nature and the world around me, childhood stories, and just everyday life stimulants such as colors, smells, sounds, or physically touching something. Puns and plays on words also figure in.

The work evolves as I am creating it, rarely being a concrete idea when I start. My pieces generally hold a story of a snippet of life. I strive to create an interesting form that evokes in the viewer a feeling of curiosity and happiness and that appeals to all ages.
